Where the Locals are...
When I walk down the boulevard of Abbott Kinney, seeing the ever changing face lift of Venice, I sometimes have a moment of sadness. At times I get very sentimental of this place we call home. I miss the quiet, unpretentious and small bungalows. The fire truck sirens blaring almost every few hours, along with the four story homes, and traffic jams makes this little island a bit unsettling... it's like we are all living on a highway and don't realize it. Shops open and close yearly, which means friends come and go yearly.
I've come to understand our neighborhood pretty darn well, being an eleven year local, and native to these lands. the many who come for a bit, or just landed here... who write about Venice don't necessarily have it right... It's not about the up and coming, it's about the tried and true.. that's the hot spot.
Don’t get me wrong, the many that are making Venice so desirable are doing a good job, thank you, we have a bonifide neighborhood in the mirrors of Manhattan.
While we are grateful for the many more places to dine... Why not list our favorites, perhaps, dish by dish, and local to local?
Axe has always been number one, sadly it did close down for a year, then picked it self right back up... and So happy they did. It’s a serious local, locals spot. One of the very few that open when there wasn't much on the Abbott Kinney block back in 1999... AXE is the original trend setter. If I need some local love, I head to Axe. I come for the basic bowl and their outstanding home-made sausage, but everything is delicious. It's also a great place to eat alone while your writing and dreaming up the next idea.... at least that's what I do.
Where the locals are? Is the latest of reviews... from a locals point of view. Tune in each week for some local time love. If you are missing the beat, just check out the website sections to help guide you. By the end of the summer, we'll be running more frequently... for now it's about taking subtle dips in the ocean before taking that much needed plunge! get me.
